The ceremony of shaving off hair to give up to Lord Vishnu has been practiced by Hindus for literally thousands of years. One Hindu legend holds that Lord Vishnu took up residence in an anthill for the purpose of performing yogic penance. His friend, Lord Brahm, took on the form of a cow to feed Vishnu with his holy milk everyday. The farmer, who did not know why the cow kept wandering off tried to cut the cow. From this, the Lord Brahm was wounded on the head and lost some hair. When Neeladri, a devotee of Lord Brahm, saw what happened she quickly gave some of her own hair to Lord Brahm. Thus was born the tradition of offering hair to Lord Balaji.

India is a country dominated with a huge religious population of Hindus. Hinduism is an amazing religion consisting of various myths and beliefs in the name of faith. One such belief, in Hinduism is sacrificing ones hair in the name of god. Donating hair to god is an ancient practice, which has been going on for centuries. Hair, for most people, is what defines their physical appearance. Whether long or short it can be an expression of social conformity and affiliation. Hairstyles, along with clothing, show who you are in this fashionable world we live in. In India, cutting off or sacrificing your hair in Hinduism is considered as letting go of your ego in front of, the spiritual power called God. No one is greater in front of God, and by sacrificing your hair in the name of God, you are letting go of your ego and your everyday life routine and devoting time for God. People in India usually donate hair because they are either grateful for or seeking a blessing.

The Temples raise millions of pounds a year from donations and the sale of hair removed in the ceremonies. The money is used not only to run the temple but to maintain dozens of foundations, charities and local development projects within local communities.
